EPR

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for OEMs in India

Stay compliant, stay responsible, with NavPrakriti. We help battery manufacturers meet recycling targets to earn an EPR credit.

Recycle. Recover. Reuse – Responsibly

Your Trusted Partner for EPR Compliance under BWMR-2022

The Battery Waste Management Rules (BWMR-2022) have made it mandatory for battery producers across India to take responsibility for what happens after a product’s first life. The companies must comply with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) to ensure that batteries are collected, recycled, and disposed of in an environmentally sound manner. At NavPrakriti, we help Producers, Importers, and Brand Owners (PIBOs) fulfill these EPR obligations and earn an EPR registration certificate. We have an advanced facility and with certified recycling, transparent traceability, and audit-ready documentation, so you stay compliant.

How NavPrakriti Helps OEMs with EPR Certification

When an OEM applies for EPR, they must share proper documentation. At NavPrakriti, we back you up with valid documentation to help you comply with the EPR requirements. Here is how we help you:
Certified, Audit-Ready Recycling:

When you choose an uncertified recycling company, traceability often becomes a major issue. At NavPrakriti, every process at our plant is backed by Certificates of Analysis (CoA), traceability records, and material balance sheets. Even our recovery batch is verified using standardized testing methods such as ICP-OES, and gravimetric analysis.

Real-Time Data and Reporting:

Our systems generate real-time compliance data, ensuring your returns to the CPCB are accurate and transparent. From intake to final output, every stage is digitally mapped and documented.

End-to-End Waste Management Services:

With NavPrakriti, you get everything. We are your integrated partner for recycling, refurbishing, and refining. We offer:

  • Reverse logistics for nationwide battery collection.
  • Data templates for CPCB submissions.
  • Documentation for quarterly and annual EPR returns.
  • Per-metal recovery records for EPR credit acquisition.
Verified Recovery, Proven Results:

Our hydrometallurgical refining facility ensures:

  • Recovering up to 98% of Nickel and Cobalt, and around 85% of Lithium.
  • More or equal to 20% extraction of Aluminium and Copper
  • More or equal to 90% overall recovery efficiency across operations
  • COA-backed proof for every shipment
Collaborative Compliance Ecosystem:

We work closely with CPCB, CMET, and IIT Kharagpur to align process integrity with regulatory and scientific benchmarks, setting new standards for India’s circular energy economy.

How can OEMs Earn EPR Certification?

EPR, or Extended Producer Responsibility, is a policy mechanism to promote a circular economy. It closes the loop by recycling lithium-ion batteries, recovering valuable materials, and reusing them to reduce the need for mining new resources. EPR certification is applicable for battery producers, importers, and brand owners.

Here’s how OEMs and producers can earn an EPR registration certificate:

    • You have to register with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) under the EPR framework.
    • Then declare annual sales and determine recycling targets by battery type and chemistry.
    • Procure EPR certificates corresponding to metals like Lithium (Li), Nickel (Ni), Cobalt (Co), Copper (Cu), and Aluminium (Al).
    • Maintain proper documentation of collection, transport, and recycling that complies with the requirements.

Why OEMs Need to Comply with EPR

Protecting the environment is everyone’s responsibility. For OEMs, taking sustainable and environmentally conscious decisions is more than that. It is a compliance and also a way for them to build trust and better relationships with investors, stakeholders, and consumers.

Here are a few more reasons why battery manufacturers need EPR certification:

Complying with BWMR-2022

Non-compliance with BWMR-2022 comes with severe consequences. OEMs might have to pay penalties and even lose their license. This also negatively affects your reputation. EPR ensures OEMs stay aligned with BWMR-2022 and CPCB reporting protocols through verified documentation and traceable certificates.

Sustainability Commitments

Consumers and investors demand transparency in everything. Meeting EPR targets reflects a company’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing and responsible end-of-life management.

Circular Supply Chain Security

Recovering valuable metals such as Nickel, Cobalt, and Lithium reduces dependence on virgin mining and secures critical raw materials for future production.

Data-Driven Accountability

EPR compliance requires maintaining a detailed record of how much material is recycled, where it goes, and how it’s processed, ensuring audit-ready proof of responsibility.

Doing our part for a cleaner planet.

Transitioning to a sustainable future requires the responsible use of our valuable and finite resources.

Through our focus on battery recycling, we aim to minimize environmental impact and foster a sustainable future, keeping our people and planet in mind. This approach allows us to keep the well-being of both nature and communities at the forefront of our operations.

Through our efforts, we seek to drive meaningful change and create a world where future generations can thrive in harmony with their environment. It all starts with NavPrakriti.

FAQs

1. What is an EPR certificate, and how does it differ from EPR registration?

Ans. An EPR certificate is the document issued once you’ve met your recycling/recovery targets through authorised recyclers or refurbishers. The certificate indicates fulfillment of your obligations under EPR. EPR Registration, on the other hand, is the first step to get your authorization to operate under the EPR framework.

2. How long is an EPR certificate valid for battery-waste producers?

Ans. For battery waste, an EPR certificate is typically valid for five years from the date of issue, subjected to the fulfilment of conditions and correct documentation.

3. What happens if a producer fails to procure sufficient EPR certificates to meet targets?

Ans. If the required targets (via collection, recycling, recovery) are not met and you don’t hold the required EPR certificates, you may be liable for environmental compensation or penalties under the BWMR-2022 framework.

4. Is there any renewal deadline for EPR registration certificates?

Ans. Yes. As per CPCB, you need to apply for renewal at least 120 days before the EPR certificate's expiry date.
