What is the difference between repurposing and recycling batteries?

At Nav Prakriti, we often get asked: what’s the difference between repurposing and recycling batteries? While both aim to reduce waste and extend battery life, they are two very different processes.

Repurposing (also called second-life use) means we reuse a battery for a different purpose once it’s no longer strong enough for its original job. For example, when an electric vehicle (EV) battery drops below driving standards, we can repurpose it for energy storage—like storing solar power in homes or buildings. The battery isn’t taken apart; instead, it’s tested, cleaned, and used again in a lower-demand setting. This extends the battery’s life by several years.

Recycling, on the other hand, happens when a battery is no longer usable at all. In this process, we dismantle or shred the battery to extract valuable materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel. These materials are then refined and reused to make new batteries or other products. Recycling is more technical and energy-intensive but helps recover raw materials and reduce mining.

In simple terms:
👉 Repurposing = reuse without breaking down the battery
👉 Recycling = recovery of materials by breaking it down

At Nav Prakriti, we support both approaches as part of a holistic, sustainable battery lifecycle. Together, they help build a cleaner, greener, and more circular economy.
